Betty Carolyn Locklear of McColl, SC departed this earthly life for her eternal rest on Friday, June 17, 2016. She was in the care of Hospice of Scotland County in Laurinburg. Mrs. Betty was 66 years old.
There will be a celebration of Mrs. Betty’s life on Monday, June 20, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Berea United Methodist Church in the Berea Community outside of McColl with interment to follow in the Bowen Family Cemetery on Stateline Rd. Pastor Emily Davis will be the officiant. There will also be a time of visitation and reflection Sunday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 at Rogers Funeral Home in McColl.
Betty was born on a Sunday, February 19, 1950 to the late Woodrow Locklear and the late Monnie Bowen Locklear in Scotland County, NC. She was a Red Devil graduate of McColl High School (Class of 1968). She was an avid reader and loved Nicholas Sparks romance novels and murder mysteries. Her love of reading made her a wonderful writer and a story-teller who brightened many days with the memories and stories she shared on Facebook and with those who stopped by to visit. Betty had a servant’s heart in everything she did. Whether it was making aprons for a little girl’s birthday party or serving her community through Helping Hands, she was always there to help anyone who needed it. Betty sang in the church choir at Berea (United Methodist Church) where she was a life-long member. She was the adult class Sunday school teacher and also served as the Sunday school superintendent. She spent her career as a manufacturing auditor with JP Stevens, where she worked for 39 years, and she would eventually retire from Merritor.
In addition to her aforementioned parents, Betty was preceded in death by a son, Gene Patrick Locklear (2011), and two sister-in-laws, Janie Locklear (2015), and Faye Locklear (2015).
To treasure her memory she leaves behind her husband of almost 48 years, Blanchard “Shorty” Locklear of the home; two sons, Gerald Locklear and wife Becky of McColl and Angus Yates Locklear and Britton McGraw of the home; three brothers, Clyde Locklear of Laurel Hill, NC, James Locklear of Bennettsville, SC, and William “Whitey” Locklear and wife Christine of Laurinburg, NC; two sisters, Wanda Strickland and husband Roy of Laurinburg, NC, and Audrey Gail Locklear of Gibson, NC; eight grandchildren, Ila Locklear, Yates Locklear, Jr., Jacob Locklear, Jared Locklear, Bryce Locklear, Emmie McGraw, Jaford Clark, and Andrew Currie; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Blankenship, as well as a host of nephews, nieces, neighbors and friends who will miss her deeply.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to Berea United Methodist Church at 3814 Berea Church Rd, McColl, SC 29570.
