McCOLL, S.C.

Grady McCoy Hubbard, 95, died peacefully on July 14, 2015 at Morrison Manor in Laurinburg.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Main Street United Methodist Church.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Hope House across the street from the church. A private interment will be held in Beaverdam Cemetery.

Grady was born on Feb. 12, 1920 and was the eighth of 10 children born to Wade Hampton and Carrie Granger Kennedy Hubbard of McColl. He was a respected merchant, carrying on the mercantile business begun by his father around 1903.

He served his country in World War II as a combat infantryman in Co.E 318th Regiment of General George Patton’s 80th Infantry Division. He was twice wounded in the Alsace-Lorraine campaign and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Returning to McColl after the war, he resumed work in Hubbard’s Market, later becoming the owner. His passion was collecting antique items, guns, and coins. He was, with Dr. C.W. Love, a co-founder of the McColl Museum, and contributed a large portion of the items on display. He worked tirelessly to maintain Beaverdam Cemetery, where he will be interred beside his beloved Millie, for many years.

His loving wife Mildred Liles “Millie” Hubbard preceded him in death. He is survived by his brother David Ray Hubbard of Columbia and several nieces and nephews.

Grady enjoyed a wonderful trip to Washington D.C. on May 27, 2009 with “Honor Flight” to tour the World War II memorial and other military memorials.

Grady was a life member of Main Street United Methodist Church, a 70 year member of American Legion, a life member of the National Rifle Association, and a member of Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Special thanks to John and Ann Pearce, Cecil and Carol Coleman, Scotia Village staff and employees, and Hospice of Scotland County, who assisted with Grady’s care.

Memorials may be sent to Main Street United Methodist Church or to the Humane Society of Marlboro County or Hospice of Scotland County.
