Mr. Melvin Douglas Grooms, age 70, passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer on January 8, 2018 at his home surrounded by members of his loving family.

He was born on April 16, 1947, in Scotland County, NC. He was the son of the late Allen and Dovie Belle Locklear Grooms. He was a contracted construction worker building bridges all over the states of North Carolina and Virginia. He was an avid Duke Blue Devils fan and enjoyed all ball sports and NASCAR racing. He was a short stop in a softball league in Laurinburg for many years. His main hobby was fishing, and many people referred to him as “The Fish Man”.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis B. Grooms of the home; daughter, Amy Grooms McGill of Maxton, NC, adopted daughter, Chasika Booth of Clio, SC, step-son Roy Barfield (Christy) of Tatum, and step-daughter, Hazel Barfield Hope (Curt) of McColl; brothers, Jennings Grooms (Bernice) and Robert Grooms (Becky) of McColl, SC, and Richard Grooms of Rowland, NC; sisters, Dorothy Clark (Howard) of Laurinburg, NC, Carolyn Grooms and Gladys Marie Lee (Larry) of McColl, Lorraine Lesley of North Myrtle Beach, SC and Darlene Rosario (Alberto) of Ramstein, Germany; 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents listed above; and by two brothers, Marshall Grooms and John Allen Grooms.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at McColl Church of God with burial at Rogers Cemetery in McColl, officiated by Rev. Jerry Springs and Rev. Dr. Roy Puckett. A visitation will be held from 6-8pm Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at McColl Church of God.
