Mr. William “Billy Mac” Martin McCollum, Jr., age 82, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 23, 2017, at Morrison Manor in Laurinburg, NC, after an illness.

Born in the McColl Township of Marlboro County, SC, on December 1, 1934, he was a son of the late William Martin McCollum, Sr., and Catherine McArver McCollum. He was a member of McColl First Baptist Church, and attended Main Street United Methodist Church of McColl where he was active in the Methodist Men’s Club. He retired after many dedicated years of service from T&C Phone Company as a telephone installer.

Mr. “Billy Mac” proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged on July 30, 1958, and received the National Defense Service Medal. He volunteered with the McColl Fire Department for many years, coached little league football and baseball, and was a die-hard Clemson Tigers fan. He enjoyed shagging, hunting, fishing and watching classic western movies, especially old John Wayne movies. He was a Mason and a very active Shriner. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He will be remembered as a long-time friend to many and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Surviving are his devoted wife, Mary Neale Newton McCollum of their home in McColl; by daughters, Cathy (Philip) Chaipis of Blythewood, SC, and Peggy (Archie) Thompson of McColl; a sister, Polly (Whit) Wilson of Roseboro, NC; by grandchildren, Brock, Heath, Trae, Erin, Andrea, Jonathan and Alyssa; and by great-grandchildren, Brayden, Bryce, Kaylee, Anna Grace, Luke and Kyrie; also by nieces and nephews.
