Mrs. Margaret Delaine Burroughs Nicholson, age 68, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home, on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, surrounded by her loving family after an illness.

Born in Bennettsville, SC, on October 23, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Edward Burroughs and Ruby Fender Burroughs.

Margaret was a very talented athlete and a graduate of McColl High School. She received her Undergraduate Degree from UNC Pembroke and her Masters in Social Work from USC. She began her career as a physical education teacher at McColl High School. She later persued a very extensive career as a social worker having retired after more than 30 years in both Scotland and Marlboro County.  She loved playing tennis and golf, and enjoyed her daily Bible reading.  But most of all she cherished time spent with her loving family. In 1975, Margaret married the love of her life John A. “Sonny” Nicholson, Jr., and they celebrated 41 years of marriage this past September.

Margaret was a devoted life-long member of Eastside Baptist Church in McColl, where she served as a deacon, former Sunday School teacher, and was a member of the choir and WMU. Most recently she became a member of the Carlisle Book Club in McColl.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 41 years, John A. “Sonny” Nicholson, Jr. of their home in McColl; her loving son, John A. Nicholson, III of Washington, DC; and by two sisters, Gwen B. Marcum and husband Troy D. Marcum of McColl and Patsy B. Barfield of McColl; by a special sister-in-law, Frances Townsend of Bennettsville;  she is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M.on Friday, January 6, 2017 at Eastside Baptist Church in McColl officiated by Rev. Dr. Thomas Marshall. Burial will follow at the Newton Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 12 noon until the time of services at 1 PM at the church. 

Serving as pallbearers will be David Duffy, Jimmy Jones, Rodney Marcum, Robert Norris, Brian Brumbles and Rusty Fowler.

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above; by an infant brother, Lawrence Edward Burroughs; and by her brother-in-law, Fairley Barfield.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to: Eastside Baptist Church, 201 N. Church Street, McColl, SC  29570.
