McColl, SC
Miss Virginia Inez McGuirt, age 88 of McColl, SC ascended to her heavenly home on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Morrison Manor in Laurinburg, North Carolina.
She was born on June 21, 1929 in Little Rock, South Carolina. She was the daughter of the late John Barber McGuirt, Sr. and Martha Jane MisKelly.
Virginia graduated from McColl High School in 1947, and from Winthrop College with a BS degree in 1951, and later earned a master’s degree from Peabody College in 1959. She was a retired high school biology teacher, having taught in Colorado, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. She taught school for the deaf and blind in Savannah, Georgia. Virginia coached women’s basketball and loved watching women’s basketball on television. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for the past fifty years and she served as an Elder and the Clerk of the Session for many years, as well as the church historian. She also served as a hospice volunteer for both Marlboro and Scotland County.
Virginia is survived by her best friend of fifty years, Margaret Jane McCorkle and numerous nieces and nephews.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents listed above; and by four brothers: James McGuirt, Henry Russell McGuirt, Julian McGuirt, II, and Rufus McGuirt; and one sister, Rosa Lee McGuirt Quick.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, February 6, 2018, at McColl First Presbyterian Church with burial in Tatum Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Ray Howe and Rev. James Bumgardner. The visitation will be held at the church beginning at 1:00 pm prior to the service.
