Richard Grooms Obituary

McColl, SC

Richard Grooms, age 70, entered his Heavenly home on February 8, 2024, surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness. He attended Calvary Way Baptist Church in Pembroke, NC.

Richard was born in Marlboro County on May 12, 1953, to the late Allen and Dovie Bell Grooms.

Richard grew up in a big, loving family with 5 brothers and 5 sisters. He made certain that each one knew he loved them. He often was found visiting them for hours sharing fond memories and humorous stories.

Richard graduated in 1971 from McColl High School.  He had a strong work ethic that he learned from his father (Allen) and his father-in-law (Roy Hill) by working in the tobacco fields.  Later, he began working at J.P. Stevens in Wallace, SC. In 1984, he started a new career at Campbell Soup where he retired as leader of the Labeling Department. He was a member of the McColl Rescue Squad for 26 years serving as captain for 15.

Richard was an avid Nascar and UNC Tarheel fan. He enjoyed riding around town, visiting friends and family, and taking care of others. He attended as many family and friend functions as possible.

Richard had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. He was always there to help a friend when in need. He was faithful in visiting hospitals, those who were homebound, and the bereaved. He loved others, and others loved him just as much.

Richard’s greatest blessings were his huge family, especially his daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. They were his pride and joy, and he made sure every one of their needs and wants were met which resulted in some very spoiled grandchildren.

Richard is now at rest with his Heavenly Father. He leaves behind a rich legacy that will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and his beloved town of McColl.

Richard is survived by daughters; Penny Grooms (Michael), Nicole Jacobs (Ray), Anitra Maynor, and Atoria Chavis (Rick); son Anthony Maynor (Brandy); brothers Jennings Grooms (Bernice), Robert “Coon” Grooms (Becky); Sisters Dorothy Clark, Carolyn Grooms, Gladys Marie Lee (Larry), Loraine Lesley, Darlene Rosario (Alberto); Brothers-in-law Autry Lowry, Jeff Lowry; Sisters-in-law Joyce Williams (Tommy), Phyllis Grooms; 22 Grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and one soon to be born; Faye Grooms (mother of Penny and Debbie).

Richard was preceded in death by his parents listed above, wife Renee Lowry Grooms; daughter Debbie Jones; brothers John Allen Grooms, Melvin Grooms, and Marshall Grooms; honorary mother Virginia Smith.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at Calvary Way Baptist Church at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at Lowry Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at McColl Pentecostal Holiness Church on Monday, February 12, 2024, from 6:00-8:00 PM.
