James Allen Polston, 90, of Maxton, NC, departed this life on Thursday, March 24, 2022.
James was the son of the late Ruby Polston Ward of Norfolk, VA. He was born on July 18, 1931, in Whiteville, NC. He was raised by his grandparents Addison “Bud” Polston and Molly Ransom Polston. He grew up in the Fletcher and Berea Communities of Marlboro County, SC. He attended Fletcher Memorial High School until the 11th grade and graduated from Berea High School.
He proudly served in the SC Army National Guard from 1952 until 1962. He retired after 48 years as shipping supervisor for Luter Packing Company in Maxton, NC. He was a faithful member for over 50 years at Skyway Memorial Chapel and served as a deacon, pianist and Sunday School Superintendent among other duties. He loved gospel and country music. He enjoyed annual fishing trips to Ocean Isle Beach with his family. He was a caring husband, dad, grandpa, brother and friend.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Ethel Bowen Polston.
He is survived by his sons, Allen Dean and Audie Polston of the home, Gerald Polston and wife Carla of Laurinburg; daughter, Bonnie Knight and husband James of Laurinburg; granddaughters, Heather Davis and husband Garrett of Garner, NC, Jenna Maley and husband Jeff of Laurinburg; great-grandchildren, Andrew Garrett Davis, III, Hayden Davis, and Jeffrey Allen Maley, Jr.; brother, George Polston and wife Bernice of Bennettsville, SC; sister, Cecile Kennedy of Southern Pines, NC; brothers-in-law, Henry Eugene Bowen and wife Irene of Laurinburg, and Everett Bowen and wife Bernice of McColl, SC and many nieces, nephews and friends.
A public committal service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 28, 2022, at Priest Cemetery in McColl. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery.
