McColl, SC
Mr. Harry Ambrose Drury, (U.S. Army Retiree), age 88, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 7, 2015 in McColl, at the home of his grandson, Timothy and Shirl Spivey. He was the beloved widower of the late Elizabeth Brigman Drury, and they would have been married for 64 years in June 2015.
Born in Martin, S. Dakota, on September 26, 1926, he was the son of the late Margurite Candelario Vaandering. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II and fought in the Battle of Okinawa, Japan. He retired from the U.S. Army and received an Honorable Discharge after 26 years of dedicated service. He was awarded the following decorations; Parachute & Glider Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal (OLC) and the Good Conduct Medal. He attended the McColl Church of God, worked as a security guard and retired as a long distance truck driver. He enjoyed eating breakfast with his friends at Skeeter’s, watching movies, painting, and loved horses. He was crazy about a Ford, and especially fond of his truck “Big Red." He was an avid football fan, especially for the Washington Redskins and was as an avid NASCAR fan and his favorite driver was Bill Elliott. He was proud of his Native American Heritage and was a Candelario Sioux Indian.
He is survived by his daughters, Barbara Drury of Darlington, Jodi Drury of McColl, Diane Cummings and husband Larry of McColl, Kathy Chavis and Charles Fletcher of Laurinburg, NC, and Linda Gayle Todd and husband Jerry of Laurinburg, NC; grandchildren, David Roller, Harry James Roller, Rick Goins, Christine Lee, Rachel Cummings and Timothy and Shirl Spivey; also 6 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Rogers Funeral Home officiated by the Rev. Donald Deal. Burial, with full military honors will follow at Rogers Cemetery. Visitation for family and friend will be held from 6-8P.M. on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Rogers Funeral Home.
Mr. Drury was preceded in death by his parents and wife listed above; and by two brothers, Keith William Drury and DeWayne Kenneth Drury.
