Obituary

McColl, SC

Thomas “Tommy” Barnett Lewellen, Jr., age 91 passed away on Friday, September 2, 2022, after an extended illness.

Tommy was born November 20, 1930, in McColl, SC, a son of the late Thomas Barnett and Ollie Mae Estridge Lewellen. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and a Korean War Veteran. A faithful member of Main Street Methodist Church, he supported countless community outreach efforts that touched the lives of many. Tommy served many career roles and was a successful insurance salesman, but finally settled into furniture sales where he devoted more than 50 years of service to his faithful customers. He also served as a Mason with the McColl Lodge, many years on the McColl School Board, and the McColl-Fletcher Area School Board of Trustees. In 2009, Tommy was honored as McColl Man of the Year. His contribution to McColl School for the establishment of the Lewellen Outdoor Classroom allowed many school students an opportunity to advance their love for science and the outdoors, which brought him much pride. His love for children was also articulated through a contribution which led to the creation of the Lewellen Baseball Field located at C.W. Love Park. Tommy cared for, and helped, so many in the McColl and Clio community throughout the majority of his life, but most of all, his love for his family was paramount.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Franklin Lewellen, Roy Lewellen, and Freddie Lewellen; sisters, Margie Taylor, Dorothy Clark, Virginia Clemmons, and Julia Bearden.

Tommy is survived by his daughters, Rhonda L. Odom (Eddie) of McColl, Allyson L. Murphy (Joe) of Bennettsville, and Jennifer L. Guinn of McColl; a sister, Ruby Mitchell (Donald) of Missouri; grandchildren, Justin Odom (Courtney), Whitney Odom (Hunter), Natalie Bagley (Scott), Mackenzie Murphy, Owen Murphy, Andrew Guinn, Thomas Luke Guinn, and Allyann Guinn; great grandchildren, Braxton Odom, Easton Odom, and Amelia Bagley; the mother of his children, Betty O. Lewellen of Bennettsville; close family friend, Odessa Richardson of McColl; special caregivers, Patricia Hodge, Brenda Richardson, and Barbara Beverly; and several other extended family members and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 4, 2022, at Main Street Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will follow the service at Roselawn Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Main Street Methodist Church.
