McColl, SC
Surrounded by his loving family, Troy Marcum passed away Sunday, October 8, 2023, at his residence in McColl. He was 84 years old.
Born October 31, 1938, in Inman, VA, Troy was one of 13 children born to the late James and Eliza Lawson Marcum. He attended high school in Appalachia, VA, and went on to join the United States Army. He was a Sergeant in the 82nd Airborne Division, stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC. He took much pride in being a soldier and paratrooper. Following his time in the military, Troy made his home in McColl, SC. He was a family man and always made time for his children and their friends in the neighborhood. He was a member of Main Street Methodist Church and retired from Roadway Express after almost 30 years of service. He spent much of his free time outdoors, working in his yard and garden and fishing at the beach and local ponds catching those spots! He enjoyed the beach and shagging to good beach music. Restoring old Volkswagens was a particularly gratifying hobby, especially his prized “Yellow Bug.” Troy had a fondness for nice clothing and was always “a sharp dressed man.” His most beloved time was spent with his devoted wife of 65 years and his children, grands, and great grands. He will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William, Bearden, Bendy, Jack, and Hamp; sisters, Frances, Margaret, Georgie, Faye, Marie, and Luana; and an infant brother.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Gwen Burroughs Marcum of the home; daughter, Dee Marcum of Laurinburg; son, Rodney Marcum (Michelle) of McColl; sister, Virginia Lee Marcum Gibson of Exeter, VA; grandchildren, Christopher Taylor, Lindsey Taylor, Hannah Smith, and Lauren Marcum; great grandchildren, Ashlyn, Christen, Chloe, Dawson, Cutler, Blake, Taylor, and Trace; great-great grandchildren, Nate, Nash, and Kason; and many other beloved family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at Main Street Methodist in McColl, followed by burial in Rogers Cemetery. The family will receive friends just prior to the service from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the church.
