Dear Hubbard Family, Mr. Grady is one of the first people I remember out of my family. When I went to school back in the 50's, I paid for my school lunch and had change to go by the grocery store to buy ice cream. He and Mr. Hilbert were always so nice to us as little kids. Many times I went to town and picked up items for Mom and he let us charge until the end of the work week. Those were the good old days. As my sisters and I grew up, we always enjoyed seeing Mr. Grady and talking with him. My first trip to the Museum lasted two hours. He told me those war stories that were so interesting to hear. He loved McColl and supported our community so much. I also enjoyed your sister, Mrs. Caroline. I loved her stories too. Once when I was attending CMTECH, I interviewed her. She told me about taking the train to Fayetteville as a child to visit her grandmother. She was so talented on the piano. Your family will be in my memories as good memories of good people that I enjoyed knowing. They are surely missed by so many. My parents were Gene and Sara Granger of McColl. I have another good friend, Candice Sligh, daughter of Mr. Edwin Sligh who turned 93 this past April 18th. He shares stories about McColl and the good families like yours that grew up in McColl and went off to war. I love when they visit me. He wasn't able to attend the service. I just want you to know I am thankful for having these good memories of your family members. You will remain in my prayers.

We first met Grady Hubbard in 2008. We met him in the Beaver Dam Cemetery while searching for the lost gravesite of my Revolutionary
War Great grandfather, Joshua Ammons of Marlboro County. His knowledge and history of Marlboro was invaluable to us in what turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of our lives. Not only did we locate and restore the Ammons Family Cemetery on the Rankin Farm but we were privileged to know and spend time with a truly great American and human being. On numerous visits to Marlboro in the early years we would see him and he would always come to the family cemetery we were restoring and marvel how we had used GPS to locate the site, but was convinced that his divining rod made from and old car spring was just as good. In the later years we would see him at John's Family reunion but as the years rolled on we knew that this day would finally come. Our lives are richer and more complete having encountered him along the way, even at such a late date!

We will miss him as long as we both shall live!

Dear David and Family,
I always believe that I am the oldest person alive but imagine my surprise when I saw Grady's obituary today
First let me express my condolences on Grady’ death. He was a fine man and I know this because I used to double date with Grady and Millie when we were all about 17. I dated Tyson Hubbard who was his cousin. Millie and I lived in Bennettsville and they lived in Tatum and would come and pick us up.
We rode around a lot and went to a place in Bennettsville that was a drive in that sold hot dogs. We laughed and laughed. Your dad was a fine man and was always sweet to Millie. We were all about 17 so it was early in their relationship. Who knew then she would turn out to be the one.
I wanted to send my condolences and tell you how sorry I was and what wonderful teenagers both Millie and Grady were. Please accept my sincere condolences. I live in Columbia with my daughter now and plan to call David sometime and tell him myself how sorry I am and to swap some old stories.

Very much enjoyed Mr. Grady's stories. (He was a hoot.) One of his many canes hangs in my home and I've thought of him often. He is home now with the love of his life and I will remember him fondly until I see him again.
